Cute Kid Story: Captain America is Constipated!

My lil guy J.C. was painting with water colors today, amazed at how a dip of the brush into a cup of water brought colors to life on paper.

"Mom, what happens when you mix all the colors together?", J.C. asks.

"I am not sure...let's find out."

"It makes a masterpiece!", J.C. says. I watched as J.C. swirled the colors into shapes, the shapes formed circles and smiling faces. Stories were forming on the page.
J.C. has grown into a love of reading from his older sister Nora, who takes time to cuddle up to him, and share a story. I read to Nora as a child, and enjoyed snuggling up with her and a good book. Now Nora is writing and illustrating books...taking up a family talent that I have inherited, and my father as a storyteller, and generations going back when slaves were not allowed to go to school or learn to read so they relied on reserves on creativity and inventiveness to craft their talent.

J.C. quickly filled one page and so I gave him another sheet of paper. Only this sheet was curling at the edges and needed to be weighted down. So I grabbed the sturdy, plastic Captain America doll dressed in blue tights with snug red boots, a signature white star painted on his chest, and half a mask covering his face.
J.C. was not content with Captain America being used as just a paper weight... no, he needed some color too! J.C. picked up his brush and stabbed Captain America with green, yellow and red. Soon Captain America was swimming in psychedelic water color, the star on his chest dyed a rainbow.

"Very nice,", I commented as J.C. painted purple facial hair on Captain America, who now donned a purple beard and a smear of a mustache.. or was that a frown?

"He's constipated.", J.C. said, "Captain America is constipated." He jabbed Captain America with the paintbrush again, bathing him in blue and orange.

I giggled. "Constiptated, huh? Ouch!"

"Con-sti-pated.". J.C. said slowly, rolling the words in his mouth, "'Cuz he's being painted!"

"Do you even know what 'constipated' means?" I asked.

"Yea. He's constipated! He's painted!". J.C. said proudly, holding up a soggy Captain America dripping in various shades of color and hue. He smiled big.

That didn't come out well. Then again, I don't think I need to rush to explain to a toddler what it really means... J.C. will just have to be "constipated" until I am ready to tell him. Until then, we can share this little laught over his error.

AIRPLANES (MOMMY AND KIDS REMIX)

My children and I love to listen to music, and sing or dance together. My son "Bear" is always excited to share the latest music he has downloaded to his tablet. His lil brother JC is known to stand on a chair and shake his booty to Monstercat (grin).

My daughter Nora loves dramatic music with a deep, soulful message. Nora expresses her thoughts and feelings through music, it has always been that way. Some of my best memories are of listening to music with my 3 beautiful children.

One of our favorite songs is "Airplanes" by B.O.B feat. Haley Williams. To honor my children, and tell our stories, I have remixed "Airplanes" to tell our stories. I could really use a wish right now... and I'd wish my children were home again, where the belong, with their loving Mommy and lil brother.

(Pic: "Wish Upon a Star" By nofacecme) AIRPLANES (MOMMY AND KIDS REMIX Yeah, yeah I could use a dream or a genie or a wish

To go back to a place much simpler than this

Cause just one visit a month ain’t enough

The time flies so fast, and then it’s goodbye…

And all the pandemonium and all the madness

There comes a time when you fade to the blackness

And when you're staring at the phone in your lap

And I’m hoping to hear a word on how you are

But that's just how the story unfolds

You get another hand soon after you fold

And when your plans unravel in the sand

What would you wish for, if you had one chance?

I'd wish for my kids to come home,

And for all the pain to fade away

So airplane airplane sorry I'm late

I'm on my way so don't close that gate

If I don't make that then I'll switch my flight and

I'll be right back at it by the end of the night

Chorus

Yeah yeah somebody take me back to the days

When I made a picnic, and we played in the park

Read stories, and said prayers at dark

Yeah back when I was a stay at home Mommy

And back then so many things I took for granted

But nowadays I’m blogging to just stay relevant

Prayers and Letters to the Children

If can make some wishes out of airplanes

Then maybe oh maybe I'll go back to the days

Before family court stole you away

And back when we were a family

And back when we sung to “Airplanes” like rap stars

But this is for my children from your loving Mommy

So can I get a wish to bring my family together again

And get back to love, and to making happy memories

So here I stand and then again I say

I'm hoping we can make some wishes outta airplanes

Mom Braves the T-Rex That Almost Ate the House

The lights flickered on and off; the house shook from its foundation to the shingles. The sky darkened as the ferocious T-Rex neared… tree branches snapped then flung against the window in broken splinters, lightning tore through the sky….

I screamed in terror, and kicked the quilt from my bed. The small feet of a 6 year old slapped against the white and lime green linoleum floor. I shoved my bedroom door open, there was a boom as the door hit the wall, and another boom as the hungry T-Rex approached. Down the hall I ran, into Mom’s bedroom. I launched through the air, bouncing the cat off the end of the bed, and slamming my small body into a pile of blankets and pillows.

There’s a T-Rex coming to eat us!” I cried to Mom, who mumbled in a dreamy reply.

Mom was there, somewhere, under the covers, warm and safe, and totally unaware of the coming menace. The cat hissed from somewhere on the floor. Then jumped back to his favorite spot at the end of the bed.

Did you hear the roar?” I screamed, “My night-light went out too! The T-Rex is coming!

Mom threw her arms out, struggling to sit. Her eyes were squinted with half-sleep. Her hair stood up in all directions. There was a loud pounding noise followed by hard droplets of rain pelting  the window.

That’s just the storm, go back to sleep.” Mom said

But I heard…

It’s thunder. Thunder is just angels bowling in Heaven.” Mom explained.

I curled into the powder blue comforter decorated with small blue roses, somewhat skeptical.

Strike!” Mom cheered faintly with another boom, “The angels are having a good time tonight.”

I imagined an angel rolling a large bowling ball at the T-Rex, knocking him from the sky, he fell back into an overgrown jungle, and disappeared behind a massive palm tree.

I could have swore I heard a T-Rex…but that was what angels are for, to keep you safe.

Birthday Party for My Child

My son's birthday is coming soon, one of the happiest days in my life, and I am sure his.

This is also a sad day for us. Since my ex is engaging in parental alienation, his typical tactics of harassment will be to either 1) not let me see my child at all on their birthday (which he did with my daughter this year) or 2) make it as difficult, and painful, as possible to show he has all the power, and then let me visit my children.

My son loves his mother, little brother and other family members. He wants to come home, and spend time with his family. My son is already thinking of the future, and when he is able to make his own decisions. This separation is only temporary, one day we will be together again. My son just wants his family in his life - both mom and dad. I agree with him. As a child, he should not have to ask or even thing about something so fundamental...that both parents be a supportive, positive influence in his life. Adults should work out their differences privately, and never involve children in their personal issues. Parental Alienation is child abuse, it is very damaging to a child, and leaves scars that last a lifetime.

So I decided to throw my son a birthday part on the blog, to let him know how special he is, and to celebrate his special day.

Music to dance to.. Bear loves Monstercats so we are dedicating "Birthday Cake" to you. Your little brother is dancing around the house in his "Turtle costume". He is wearing a plastic turtle shell on his back and green underwear with no pants because "turtles don't wear pants!" H-i-i-i-ya!

Fun Ways to Bless Your Children (Parenting Tips)

Mom and Blogger, Carlie K., shares 25 tips on how to bless your children. These fun and inspirational ideas are not things that will cost a lot of money, but rather involve investing love, time and energy into your children in a variety of creative ways25 Ways to Bless Your Child(ren)

Here are a few ideas of my own...

1) Teach them how to cook a favorite family recipe

Remember the "Green Buffet" - haha! When my daughter was little, I would tell her that there is a buffet that serves ONLY green food, called the Green Buffet. We would have fun thinking of menus of all green food, and imaging what we would eat.

2) Let a child plan a fun or special activity to do together (may need to set limits on costs)

3) Let your child run around in a costume or their pajamas all day

4) Listen to music videos together. Bonus points if you sing and dance together.

5) Ask your child how to play their favorite video games, then join in.

6) Tell your child the story or special meaning behind their name, or how you chose their name.

7) Teach your child how to pray. Or, alternately, praise dance or other meaningful spiritual celebration.

8) Do a make-over with your daughter.

9) Volunteer together. (My kids had a blast packing boxes at church for Operation Christmas Child).

10) Play charades - act out what you love about your child or a favorite family memory, and have them guess what it is

Any other ideas?? Please post yours in the comments!

Not Your Average C-A-T (Cute Pets)

My son, Bear, looks out for his 'lil brother CJ by finding educational games and toys for him to play with. Bear is always teaching his little brother something new, opening his mind to the endless possibilities, and adventures of life.

Bear got CJ the Gyro Bowl that would not spill over no matter how hard little hands tried... the bowl spinned but always righted itself, saving the carpet from an avalanche of cereal bits. Baby food smudged all over his face, and stained his hair orange but was held securely in the Gyro Bowl. This baby tested that bowl every which way, and still it held fast.

And Bear wanted to get CJ a set of read n' learn cards so his baby babble could form into real words, the cards would help CJ learn to read by using phonics. Bear got the set early on, and only now is CJ using the cards. My daughter Nora is always reading to CJ, and now teaching him how to write books. So their gift of love has been a tremendous blessing.

Someone else is learning to read as well, can you guess who???

Teen Answers Call to Prayer: Christian Crawford didn’t know who or what specifically he was praying for, he said he just felt led to it, not knowing an emergency was happening

Inspirational Story...

"Thursday evening in Alabama, Clay-Chalkville High School’s graduation was suddenly interrupted by a student who spontaneously took the podium to pray. Christian Crawford didn’t know who or what specifically he was praying for, he said he just felt led to it. Acting on that prompting turned out to be significant for one suffering person in attendance that evening.
A commencement speech was unexpectedly sidelined when a medical emergency began to unfold in the stands....
'Everybody, can I have your attention real quick?” Crawford announced, much to the surprise of his classmates. “We don’t know what’s going on, but we will pray. We know that prayer is power and that God is able. Let’s pray'.”

Keep Hope Alive: "The Fork", An Inspirational Video

Every little girl dreams of her fairy tale ending... The grass and mud splattered across her jeans were an attempt to catch the frog that hopped into the long grass with a rude croak; he was not destined to be her prince.

Every little girl has a bedroom  filled with dolls of all sizes and shapes, each one given a name and the unconditional love of a child who dreams of one day being a "mommy" that will hold a real baby. Sometimes she dreams of being a school teacher or a nurse, and on the best days she is a rock star. Her dolls are always there--as pupil, patients and adoring fans.

And sometimes...those dreams of happily-ever-after don't always turn out the way you wanted or the way you thought they would.

My daughter (and son) is growing up without a mother. I did not leave my children. In fact I had no choice at all. An unjust court ruling, and a vindictive ex stole my children away. The love for my children never leaves my heart. I pray for them every day. And when I go to the store, they are with me when I shop for meals they will never eat.. or wander in the toy section imagining what toys they like to play with. They are with me in the empty rooms, as dust gathers on their toys. I have dreams too...dreams that they will one day my children will come home, and our family will be reunited.

I am posting this video to say... keep hope alive. Your dreams may not turn out the way you want, life may have its twists and turns but one thing is for sure and that is real, unconditional love.

He is the Gift – Christmas Video – #ShareTheGift

The first gift of Christmas was a simple gift given by a father to all his children, to us. He gave us His son, the Christ. He is the gift. This Christmas season, how will you share the gift?

Polish Christmas Tradition: Sharing the Oplatek

One of the clients  (my job is home health care) I work with is Polish, and knowing of my own Polish heritage, she enjoys sharing with me stories of the traditional Polish customs. She also speaks Polish fluently, and shares songs and prayers.

One of the stories she shared with me is the Polish tradition of sharing of the Oplatek (op-wa-tek) or Christmas wafer, which is done on Christmas Eve. The tradition dates back hundreds of years, and was passed from my client's ancestors to own her family, who lived on a farm in the rural Midwest.

Christmas Eve or Wigilia, marks the end of Advent for Polish families, and is usually a day of fasting so the meal would not include meat. Advent is a time to remember the real reason for Christmas, people try not to have an excess of anything and give up their favorite foods and drinks. Typical foods served for Advent in Polish families include dumplings, beetroot soup, gingerbread and fish.

Advent also is a time when families begin to thoroughly clean their home to prepare for Christmas. My Mom also did this--disinfecting the floor with lemon cleaner, scrubbing cupboards, and arranging the Nativity scene to be displayed prominently in the center of our living room were some of her cleaning activities. Cleaning was a festive time because Mom would sing and dance to Christmas music while cleaning--her favorite was Motown Christmas, and "Christmas on Sesame Street" for my brother and I. There was a large, oval woven rug in the middle of the living room floor that I clearly remember Mom dancing on, often she picked up our cat Hooper as her dance partner, swaying to the music. My brother and I were given Advent calendars to remind us of the holiness of the season, and mark the passage to Christmas. Also, in my own family, Christmas Eve was a time for a family reunion and celebration. My Mom comes from a large family and we always gather on Christmas Eve, and later in the evening, attend Mass.

My client says that on Christmas Eve her family would gather at the table for a meal, and before they ate they would say grace then pass the oplatek around the table. The oplatek is a thin, flavorless wafer made of flour and water. The oplatek is rectangular in shape and embossed with images of the Holy Family or the Nativity Scene. The oplatek is shared with one family member to another, who breaks then offers a blessing or asks for forgiveness.  It is a time to tell family members that you love them, or ask for forgiveness and make peace. The oplatek is shared around the table until every member has shared it. When the oplatek is eaten, it is a sign that the blessing or forgiveness has been accepted. My client said that when her children grew older, they would break the oplatek then go in a private room to talk, catching up on recent events or laughing over memories shared.

What a beautiful tradition! I am so thankful my client shared this with me, I am excited to begin this tradition with my own children, and rekindle our connection to our Polish heritage.

German Prayer for Child

I learned a beautiful German prayer today...

I work in home healthcare and my client said this prayer, in perfect German, I almost cried... it reminded me of my beautiful Great-Grandma, and of those tender moments tucking my own children into bed.

My mother's side of the family is from Germany, they settled in a small, town founded by fellow German pioneers, and later owned a butcher shop. The butcher shop specialized in sausages but sold other delicious meats such as braunschweiger, headcheese and pickled pig knuckles. As a small child, I remember how special it was when my Mom would open an antique box that was the faded color of buttercups and decorated with lace. The top of the box had the picture of a woman on it, with a bug bouffant of wavy hair and bow shaped lips. I think she was also holding a glass bottle of cola. The box held all of Mom's treasures...including an old photo of my great-grandmother. My great-grandmother was a dainty woman with dark, flashing eyes. She was known to be a strong woman, who went into business to help her husband at a time women traditionally stayed at home. She adored her two children--Grandma and her brother. And died young, of pneumonia. Grandma named my favorite Aunt after her mother. And my Mom named a doll after her--my daughter and her cousin just love playing house with the doll. So her memory lives in our hearts, and in our love.

THE GERMAN PRAYER

Jesukindlein komm zu mir,
Mach ein frommes Kind aus mir. Mein Herzerl ist klein, Kann niemand hinein, Als du, mein liebes Jesulein.

Baby Jesus come to me
Make a pious child out of me
My little heart is so small
No one can get in
Except for you my lovely little Jesus.

The Benefits of a Mother's Love and Nurturing

A recent study reveals the benefits of a mother's love and nurturing on her children...

"Children who are given love and affection from their mothers early in life are smarter with a better ability to learn.

The study by child psychiatrists and neuroscientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, found school-aged children whose mothers nurtured them early in life have brains with a larger hippocampus, a key structure important to learning, memory and response to stress.

The new research is the first to show that changes in this critical region of children’s brain anatomy are linked to a mother’s nurturing, Neurosciencenews.com reports." ("A mother's love can boost brain power, study shows" by Daily Mail Reporter, 1-31-2012).

The way a mother nurtures and loves her child actually begins before birth. Not only does a mother's body biologically support the baby growing inside her, but most mothers facilitate a bond with their baby before birth-- praying for the baby or participating in religious ceremonies, hugging or caressing her growing belly, talking or singing to baby, sharing the pregnancy with family and friends and joining mother's groups or classes are all common ways the mother-child bond begins before birth. At as early as 20 weeks, an unborn baby can recognize his mother's voice and after birth, will prefer her voice (and her smell) to any other

After birth the bonding continues between mother and child, it is recognized that skin-to-skin contact between mother and child is immensely beneficial to newborns. Breastfeeding also increases that bond, mothers who bottle feed also benefit from holding or cuddling their babies. What babies learn about the world, begins first at home.

Babies prefer the music their mother listened to when pregnant over any other music, they also recognize the smell of the mother's body and the sound of her voice. As young as 6 months old, babies learn to communicate by lip reading--and learn emotion from watching the faces of mother, and other adults important in their lives.

Although a mother has a special role in the lives of her children, researchers say that the effects of nurturing on the children are also beneficial from others providing care including fathers, siblings, grandparents or adoptive parents. Perhaps if we as individuals and members of a larger society, realized what power there is in demonstrating love and care for other people, the world would be a better place? We only need to look to our loving mothers to know this is possible.

Teen Driving Inspires Mom's Memories

My teenage son Bear is dreaming about the day he can get a license and drive a car... I remember the days he drove his walker, his fat 'lil feet slapping against the floor as he took off in search of adventure, or trouble!

Bear was not like other babies, he is very mechanical minded; he could take apart or dismantle anything. He would figure out how to get past obstacles even if it meant climbing, tearing down baby gates or busting barriers meant to protect him. The baby locks used to keep babies out of drawers and cabinets--easily defeated. Bungee cords to hold closets shut, also over come. Bear would run across the house in his walker then ram the baby gate to knock it down, and happily wander through the house or raid the fridge. He would climb dressers, chairs and boxes to get into things. He would climb out of his crib (while the cat slept happily inside).

Once Bear broke down a baby gate, somehow climbed down the basement stairs, crawled across the floor and scaled up a ladder... when I found Bear, he was climbing through the cat door with his head, chest and arms fully outside and his feet dangling in the air!

My other favorite memory of Bear is when he was about 9 months old. He must have been studying the wood trim nailed to the wall for quite some time, determining its weak spots. I left the room briefly to get a drink from the fridge, Bear was laying on an oriental rug as if, I thought asleep. When I came back into the room, Bear had pried the wooden trim off the wall and was dragging a board at least 5 feet long across the floor!

Now that Bear is a teenager... I know with that kind of determination, it will not be long before he gets his license. All I have to say to those on the road is... watch out! Kidding! LOL. If anything, Bear will be adventurous, exploring hidden dirt roads, and venturing to weird tourist sites. He dreams about strapping a car seat in the back, and taking his little brother CJ for a ride. He will tinker with the mechanics, my friend has promised to show Bear how to do repairs.

And finally, his freedom will have been won--no baby gates, no obstacles, just a set of keys and an open road.

Bear said he would like to drive so he can come see me... son, you are welcome home anytime. I keep you and your sister in my prayers, and in my heart. Tu eres mi corazon.

I Wish You Enough (Prayer and Poem) - Bob Perks

"I WISH YOU ENOUGH" by Bob Perks
Recently, I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport as the daughter's departure had been announced. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said:
"I love you and I wish you enough."
The daughter replied, "Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom." They kissed and the daughter left.
The mother walked over to the window where I sat. Standing there, I could see she wanted and needed to cry.
I tried not to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, "Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?" "Yes, I have," I replied. "Forgive me for asking but why is this a forever good-bye?"
"I am old and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is the next trip back will be for my funeral," she said.
When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, "I wish you enough." May I ask what that means?"
She began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone." She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more.
"When we said 'I wish you enough' we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them". Then turning toward me, she shared the following, reciting it from memory,
"I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye."
She then began to cry and walked away.
They say it takes a minute to find a special person.
An hour to appreciate them.
 A day to love them.
And an entire life to forget them.

NOTE: I received this on a chain e-mail, during a time I was really missing my kids. The words may have been altered from the original version as passed along. I thought the words and the meaning behind them were not only beautiful but contain alot of truth. That you to Bob Perks for sharing your wisdom with us!
